This creamy eggnog recipe transforms the classic festive beverage into a rich, spiced eggnog jam spread. Combining traditional flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, and dark rum with a smooth texture thickened by cornstarch and optional powdered pectin, this versatile recipe is perfect as a holiday treat or a flavorful addition to desserts and breakfast foods.

Ingredients

Eggnog Base

  • 1 ½ cups eggnog (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 2 tablespoons dark rum (optional, but recommended for a true eggnog flavor)

Optional Thickener

  • 1 package (3 oz) powdered pectin (optional, if you prefer a thicker jam)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Eggnog Base: In a medium saucepan, pour the eggnog and whisk in the cornstarch until fully dissolved. Stir in the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Heat the mixture over medium heat while stirring constantly until it begins to simmer and thickens slightly, approximately 5 to 7 minutes.
  2. Add Butter and Flavoring: Lower the heat to medium-low and add the butter cubes, stirring until fully melted and incorporated. Stir in the vanilla extract and dark rum if using. Continue cooking for an additional 2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  3. Thicken the Jam: For a firmer jam consistency, sprinkle the powdered pectin into the mixture while whisking continuously to avoid clumps. Cook for another 1 to 2 minutes until the jam thickens further. Skip this step for a looser, custard-like texture.
  4. Cool and Jar the Jam: Remove the saucepan from heat and let the eggnog jam cool for 5 to 10 minutes. The mixture will continue to thicken as it cools. Pour the cooled jam into sterilized jars, seal tightly, and refrigerate to store.

Notes

  • The dark rum is optional but enhances the authentic eggnog flavor. Non-alcoholic versions are equally delicious without it.
  • Using powdered pectin is optional and adjusts the texture from creamy spread to a thicker jam suitable for spreading with a knife.
  • Store the eggnog jam refrigerated and consume within 1 to 2 weeks for best quality.
  • Ensure jars are sterilized properly to extend shelf life and maintain food safety.
