This Healthy Protein Puppy Chow is a delicious, crunchy snack made with gluten-free Chex cereal coated in a rich chocolate, peanut butter, and maple syrup mixture, and then dusted with protein powder for an extra boost. It's a perfect treat for those looking for a healthier twist on the classic puppy chow, combining indulgent flavors with nourishing ingredients for a guilt-free snack.

Ingredients

Chocolate Mixture

  • 3.5 ounces chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter (only peanuts and salt)
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1.5 tablespoons coconut oil

Main

  • 4.5 cups gluten-free honey nut Chex cereal
  • ⅔ cup chocolate or vanilla protein powder (Orgain chocolate peanut butter flavor recommended)

Instructions

  1. Combine and melt the chocolate: Add the chocolate chips, peanut butter, maple syrup, and coconut oil to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high in 30-second intervals until melted. Use a whisk to fully combine the ingredients into a thick, smooth chocolate mixture.
  2. Pour and mix: Place the Chex cereal in a large bowl. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal and toss thoroughly using a rubber spatula to coat every piece evenly. Then add the protein powder to the bowl and toss again until all the cereal is evenly coated. Alternatively, transfer the coated cereal into a ziplock bag, add protein powder, and shake to coat.
  3. Serve: Enjoy immediately or spread the puppy chow onto a lined baking sheet and let it sit or chill for a few minutes to set and get crunchier before serving.

Notes

  • Use gluten-free Chex for a gluten-free snack.
  • The protein powder coating adds extra nutrition and flavor, but can be adjusted based on taste preferences.
  • Chilling the puppy chow helps the chocolate coating firm up for a crunchier texture.
  • Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
  • Perfect for an energy-boosting snack or post-workout treat.
